Make a strawberry & vanilla lip balm

For 12 days we will be publishing one formula a day that you can copy or personalise this holiday season.

DAY 6

Today’s formula is very relevant since it is winter: lip balms.

Personally, I don’t often make lip balms, simply because there are always some amazing friends who send me some. They are superb, quite easy to make but the trick is to find the right ratio of oils, butters and waxes.

The one I have today is quite simple. If you are an advanced formulator, I am sure you can think of other ways to make it or other ingredients to include. My aim was to create one that even kiddies can use.

My main base oil is jojoba which I used to macerate vanilla pods. Vanilla infused oil is amazing in body butters, lip balms, etc. I paired that with strawberry oil which has the most fantastic strawberry scent so I can omit the essential oils.

This formula is not vegan because of the beeswax but you need to remember that, just like all ingredients, waxes do not behave the same way. Beeswax will provide flexibility while candelilla gives shine and hardness to the lip balm stick.

Feel free to replace ingredients but be careful with the wax amount used to ensure it stays stable in the tube.

PERSONALISATION

  • You can replace the oils. Some oils can give superb colour to your balm, for example seabuckthorn will make it orange, hemp can make it green, plum kernel will give it a lovely marzipan scent.

  • You can add essential oils but I like to have it at 0.2% for safety. I recommend orange, mandarin, grapefruit.

HOW TO USE

Apply in the lips whenever you feel they are dry or chapped.
